Following their successful takeover of global engineering firm, Hamworthy, Wärtsilä were rolling out the SAP ERP solution across their business, moving away from their legacy ERP solution, IFS. Due to the scale of the integration programme, there was an immediate requirement to retain a portion of the IFS solution for engineering design and document management capabilities at Wärtsilä’s Asker site in Norway.
To ensure a successful ERP implementation, it was vital that the IFS solution was able to exchange data to and from the new SAP system. Wärtsilä required a data integration solution which would run autonomously from IFS and the WESB systems and integrate seamlessly, and securely, with their existing on premise IFS APPS8 solution. They also needed to ensure data integrity in the IFS APPS8 solution. Furthermore, it was imperative that the system administrators had the ability to review the messages exchanged between the two systems, in order to review errors and minimise any impact on the business. The solution also had to have the ability to be easily extended and provide a platform to allow integration with other systems.

Cooper Software developed a solution which provided a single point of reference for the system administrators responsible for the management and tracking of data exchange between IFS and the SAP system (via WESB), to view, monitor and amend specific data exchanges. The functionality provided by this solution ensured that business critical data was seamlessly shared ensuring that the day to day business operations could run smoothly.
Cooper Software’s SDK™ solution was utilised to effectively manage the transfer of data between both systems and ensure smooth integration and connectivity. The solution provides the data mapping between the IFS data objects and the data transfer objects and the Cooper Software SDK™ made this process very straightforward due to the relational mapping from IFS.
To ensure the most robust implementation, the data integration solution was built using core IFS functionality making use of the IFS Connect components to allow communication via XML over SOAP.
In order to deliver in the required timelines and ensure the data integration segment of the overall programme remained broadly in line with the development of the WESB integration solution, the development of the solution was split in to 2 streams of work. Stream 1 allowed for development of the IFS components for the outbound i.e. from IFS interfaces, while Stream 2 concerned the development of the data mappings and loading of data into IFS from the inbound messages.
